Safety advice when using leaning ladders
Posted on 29th Jun, 2015 | By Lorretta Tatham
With a fall from a ladder being a real risk for any tradesperson, it’s important to consider and follow the proper safety procedures prior to and during their use. Leaning ladders are just one situation which carry risks if not used correctly. While the ladders themselves are safe, it’s poor preparation and lack of responsibility that can lead to accidents when in use.
Extension ladders, multi-purpose ladders, and telecoms ladders can all be classed as leaning ladders. Whether your find yourself using these ladders once, or on a daily basis, it’s essential that you’re properly clued up on their use.
How to set up your leaning ladder
When using a leaning ladder, it’s important to consider health and safety right from the start. Taking time to set up your ladder correctly will massively reduce the risk of accidents happening while they’re in use.
Place the ladder in the correct position
Always follow the four-to-one-rule. This rule says that for every four feet of height you’re climbing, move the base one-foot away from the wall. For example, if you’re climbing 20ft, the base of the ladder should be 5ft away from the wall.
Make sure the base of the ladder has a secure footing on the ground
Ideally the base should be secured. If this isn’t possible, ask a colleague to stand at the bottom of the ladder to keep it in place.
Consider tying the ladder in place to prevent slipping
This should be done wherever possible – either at the top of the ladder or bottom, making sure both stiles are tied.
Think about investing in a ladder-stability device
For extra security, use a ladder-stability device. Most effective ladders will have this stability built in, if not, you will need to invest in this additional accessory.
