Complete Daily Ladder Safety Checklist

Posted on 18th Sep, 2025 | By Joe Penrice

At Browns Safety Services, we know the importance of making sure that every ladder is safe before use, which is why we’ve put together a clear ladder safety checklist to help businesses carry out daily inspections.

In addition to this, our specialist ladder safety courses give employees the knowledge they need to spot risks and keep safety standards high. Combining a checklist with proper training also helps ensure ladders are always safe to use and that your workplace meets essential health and safety requirements.

What to include in your checklist

A safety checklist for ladders is a simple but effective tool in making sure that your equipment is in good working order before each workday. Here’s what to include:

Pre Use Inspection

Before climbing, check that:

  • Rungs and stiles are in good condition
  • Feet and fittings are secure and undamaged
  • The ladder has no twists, bends or warping
  • There are no missing parts
  • Surfaces are free from cracks, dents and sharp edges
  • General wear has not made the ladder unsafe

Ladder Setup

When positioning the ladder, you should make sure:

  • It is placed on a stable, level surface
  • Extension ladders are set at the correct angle (around 75°)
  • The top of the ladder is properly secured to prevent movement
  • There is enough clearance at the base, away from doorways, vehicles or high-traffic areas

Safe Usage

During use, always check:

  • The user maintains three points of contact at all times
  • The ladder feels stable, with no wobbling or shifting
  • An anti-slip device or stabiliser is in place where needed
  • Outdoor use is safe in current weather conditions
  • The ladder is not overloaded, and the weight limit is respected

Employer’s Responsibilities

Employers have a duty of care to make sure ladders are safe at work. This includes:

  • Carrying out regular ladder inspections and recording the date of each check
  • Ensuring that ladders are properly maintained and stored
  • Making sure the competent person inspecting ladders is qualified and trained
  • Keeping full documentation of inspections and maintenance
  • Providing training, such as ladder inspection courses, for staff responsible for safety checks

Employers should remember that failing to complete checks and keep up to date records could put employees at risk, as well as having serious legal implications. Browns’ ladder courses support businesses by ensuring every inspection is carried out to HSE standards.

FAQs

Do I need a ladder safety checklist?

Yes. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Work at Height Regulations 2005, a health and safety ladder checklist is a legal requirement. HSE guidance confirms that ladders must be inspected regularly and that pre-use checks are essential.

Should I still have a ladder safety awareness course?

Even with a checklist in place, a ladder safety awareness course is highly recommended. This training gives employees the confidence to spot faults and apply the manufacturer’s instructions correctly. It also acts as a refresher, keeping safe practices up to date. You can find more about our ladder safety awareness course here.

Are ladder safety checks a legal requirement?

Yes – ladder safety checks are an employer’s responsibility to protect staff. Businesses must show they have carried out checks, kept records and made sure ladders are safe for work. Regular inspections by a competent person, supported by training, helps reduce risks and ensure compliance with the law.
